“The Possession” is a supernatural horror film released in 2012. Directed by Ole Bornedal, the movie is loosely based on the true story of the haunted dybbuk box. The screenplay was written by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White.

Plot Summary:
The film revolves around the Brenek family, consisting of father Clyde (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan), mother Stephanie (played by Kyra Sedgwick), and their two daughters, Em (played by Natasha Calis) and Hannah (played by Madison Davenport).

While at a yard sale, Em becomes intrigued by an old wooden box with Hebrew inscriptions on it. Unbeknownst to them, the box is a dybbuk box, a container used to trap malevolent spirits in Jewish folklore. Em becomes obsessed with the box and insists on keeping it. However, strange and sinister occurrences begin to take place around her.

As Em’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic and disturbing, Clyde and Stephanie become alarmed and start seeking answers. They soon discover the box’s dark history and the malevolent spirit residing within it. The spirit is a dybbuk, and it seeks to possess and consume Em’s soul.

Desperate to save their daughter, Clyde and Stephanie turn to a Hasidic Jewish exorcist named Tzadok (played by Matisyahu) for help. With Tzadok’s guidance, they must now confront the malevolent spirit and perform a dangerous exorcism to free Em from its grip.

The movie draws on typical horror elements like demonic possession, eerie occurrences, and suspenseful moments. It explores themes of family bonds and the lengths parents would go to protect their children from supernatural threats.

Critical Reception:
“The Possession” received mixed reviews from critics but performed well at the box office. Some praised the film’s eerie atmosphere and suspenseful sequences, while others found it lacking in originality compared to other possession-themed horror movies. Despite the mixed critical response, it found an audience among horror fans and those interested in supernatural tales.
