“An American Pickle” is a 2020 American comedy-drama film directed by Brandon Trost and starring Seth Rogen. The movie is based on the 2013 New Yorker novella “Sell Out” by Simon Rich.

The story follows Herschel Greenbaum (Seth Rogen), a Jewish immigrant who arrives in America in 1919 and works in a pickle factory in Brooklyn. One day, he falls into a vat of pickles and is preserved for 100 years. He wakes up in modern-day New York City and discovers that his only surviving relative is his great-grandson, Ben Greenbaum (also played by Seth Rogen).

As Herschel struggles to adjust to the modern world and reconnect with his family, he clashes with Ben over their different views on success, identity, and the American Dream. Along the way, Herschel becomes a media sensation for his pickling skills and creates a successful business selling his family’s secret pickle recipe. However, his fame and fortune come at a cost, as he begins to lose sight of his values and the things that truly matter in life.

“An American Pickle” explores themes of family, heritage, cultural identity, and the immigrant experience. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and audiences, who praised Seth Rogen’s dual performance and the movie’s heartwarming and humorous moments.
